The Unexpected Concert Experience

Perhaps driven by the desire to be the one on stage myself, I love watching an unexpected concert experience play out on stage. Its a time when I feel like anything can happen. My experiences:

1. I've been part of the first three packed rows at a little late-career Love and Rockets concert, (Ground Zero Cafe) only to look behind me and see that there was almost no one behind us. It was either huge fans or non-fans, with no one in between.

2. Someone threw sunglasses onto the stage at an MGMT concert and Andrew immediately picked them up and put them on his face. It seems obvious that that would happen now that I've seen it, but I've never thought of trying it.

3. A gal perched on her boyfriend's shoulders gave a long flash to Everclear to the dignified approval of the band. The bands reaction was so tame they must have seen it a hundred times.

Writing these down, these sound pretty tame. I would like to know what kind of odd audience interactions you've watched unfold in a concert hall.

Comments:

Artist: Ladytron

My friend and I went to see a Ladytron concert at a small venue with maybe 100 other people. Me and said friend ended up getting heavily intoxicated prior to the gig and ended up being the only two people in the audience punching the air during the concert. The Ladytron girls seemed to like this and faced themselves our way for most of the rest of the gig. Good gig. Wish I remembered it.

As a group of us waited to go inside to see Phil Keaggy in concert, a short little man walked through the group towards the side entrance. I recognized him and yelled "There's Phil Keaggy!" He then turned around and laughed at us and said "HA! I just walked under all of you!" Funny and great guy!

Artist: The Anniversary

The Anniversary played a show at my college. Myself and a few other people were HUGE fans. After they finished, we started a cheer of "Let's go Janko *clap, clap, clap-clap-clap*" (Janko was the nickname of their drummer, whose last name is Jankowski). We kept the cheer going steady for about 5 minutes. They were obliged to come out and give an uplanned encore.

So this one time many years ago I went to an 8stops7 show at a Hard Rock Cafe. It was a fairly small restaurant, so they just moved a couple tables, set up their gear, and had quite a bit of fun. It was crazy seeing people playing the music that (up until then) I had only heard on the radio. Kind of a feeling of "ohhh, that's what it's supposed to sound like..."

My friend was front and center for a small Ben Folds show The opener, Citizen Cope, was playing an acoustic and rather drawn-out set and my friend grew impatient. In one of Cope's songs, he sings "put the gun down" at least 8 times in a row. As the line kept repeating, my friend yells "Put the gun down already!" The crowd laughed. Citizen Cope shot him a look that could have killed.

Back in 1991, at Penn State. During the drum solo the drummer starts saying "Give me an N", the audience responds "N"; Give me an O, "O". This goes on for a long time. Eventually, we realize he's spelling "No blood for oil." The drummer did not get the reaction he was expecting. The audience grew very quiet; Then, some guy way in the back yelled "F*** Iraq!" and the audience went crazy.

Some joker threw a battery at Gord Downie and he got pretty mad. Took a few minutes to cool down as the band played on, then came back and told an incredible impromptu story about how it *wasn't* a battery: it was an engagement ring, thrown by the guy's fiancee, and how she was leaving him because he was a tool for throwing things at concerts. Hilarious!

When Matisyahu started to sing the Shema - Shema Yisrael Hashem Elohenu Hashem Echad (Hear, Israel, the L-rd is our G-d the L-rd is One) - everyone in the crowd began to sing with him. To hear a packed room full of concert goers, Jew and non-Jew alike, sing the Shema was both unexpected and amazing.

Some idiot Planet smashers fan was doing backflips off the stage into the pit. He did one, kicked a mic stand straight into the singer's face. Matt, the singer, stopped playing and the band realized he was hurt and stopped too. He had chipped a tooth right in half. After moaning and swearing a minute he just said "let's take it from the 'hey hey hey!'" and off they went. What a trooper!

The level never went down from there.

Founded in 1892£¬Hollister is a century-old brand in New York. Such a kind of young, dynamic and innovative work that walks in the era of cutting-edge, is surprisingly as much as a hundred years of history. Not only that, in recent years, with a high profile, high-quality and ultra-fresh style, it also constantly spilled over from the United States and Canada, resulting in a new index for the world's new fashion.

At The Exodus/Megadeth/Testament Show In Lubbock TX. I Think It Was Right At The End Of Their Set, The Guitar Pulled A Kid (Proally About 7) Outta The Crowd, And Let Him Strum On The Guitar At The Same Time The Band Was Closing One Of Their Songs. It Totally Rocked!

Artist: Reel Big Fish

There were two openers, then Less Than Jake, and then finally Reel Big fish, so it was a kinda long show. My friend decided to shout "SLAYER!" at each new band that took the stage. When Reel Big Fish took the stage, he waited until after their intro and then, in a semi-quiet moment, shouted "HEY! THIS ISN'T SLAYER!" Everyone, including the band, lost it completely.

Artist: Green Day

On Green Day's American Idiot Tour, the Dayton, Ohio show was cancelled and re-scheduled for a few months later. Billie Joe came out and said "We want to make it up to you, so we're going to play the whole 'American idiot' album." And they did, beginning to end - followed by the rest of their show and four encores. I walked out of there completely exhausted.

Artist: Motley Crue

I was working the concert when I came out from backstage to prepare for the end of the show. I looked into the side bleachers and saw an entire section of women, ranging into the upper middle-age, perform what can only be described as a "breast wave". Instead of standing up and raising their hands these women stood up and raised their shirts. It was so well done they must have practiced.

Saw Hoobastank in Santa Cruz, CA back in 2004. Doug Robb (vocalist) closed the show singing "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" a la Cindy Lauper. It was way cool.

Artist: Cake

Went to the show too early so we went to a diner nearby. Passed the band on the way...they had just come back from the same diner. I'm not surprised because they would be the band that would go to a diner instead of bitch about m&ms backstage. Still, it was delightful.

Artist: Ramones

Ha! another Ramones one. Toads in Waterbury Ct. The opening band was "lost generation" or something like that. Same deal, loads of heckling. Since they were punk, I couldn't really tell if it was normal for the crowd to be yelling "nazi punks fuck off" Figured it wasn't when they apologised for having to play. Plus a bonus fight right in front of me duringthe ramones show.

Artist: Bouncing Souls

During the huge eastern blackout (I think circa 2003) the bouncing souls were supposed to play with Hot Water Music in Ottawa. When it was discovered that the venue had no power, everyone kinda hung around for 4 hours waiting to see if the gig would start. The lead singer ended up playing an accoustic set in the alley behind the bar while I smoked pot and drank beers with the bassist.

Artist: Carbon Leaf

During a Carbon Leaf show in Blacksburg, VA, some folks in the front row were taking pictures of Barry, the lead singer. He took their camera, took a couple MySpace-style shots of himself, and then a pic or two of the would-be photographers, and handed their camera back. The band didn't stop the whole time.

Artist: Edwin McCain

Edwin McCain played at The Call in Rhode Island, and everyone vacated the seats and bar--kind-of set away from the stage--to come sit on the floor right at the band's feet. It was like a family picnic or something. Edwin and the band kept commenting on how special the atmosphere was, how at home they felt. They played a really long set, took requests, and talked to everyone.

Artist: John McCutcheon (folk)

Like your experience, we found ourselves to be the only fans! The artist and the small audience of fans connect, a breath of fresh air for artists who play to thousands. My 7-year-old daughter was singing all the lyrics, and John asked her name and wanted her to come sing w/ him onstage. :) She was too shy! But he told her to keep singing because she sounded great! :)

Artist: Saves the Day

Getting into the music, people were too crazy, and a girl with bloody, gashed face was lifted by security onto the stage. The band played chill music while the lead vocalist thanked everyone for coming out and made the crowd promise we would keep it safe so everyone could have fun. Somehow it came off cool and not a buzzkill. The show was wild and awesome and no one got hurt after that.

Artist: world's greatest funk band

around 1986, friend asked me to play in his band for a one-off show. when we got to the gig, we learned that the band we were opening for wouldn't be there. so our audience consisted of a friend of mine, the gf of someone in the band, and a guy in a sleeping bag who slept through the show. my friend got bored and joined us on stage. said it was the most fun he ever had in a band.

Artist: DevilDriver, Killswitch, Lamb of God(?),

I caught a metal festival with the above bands, and possibly others whose names escape me, in Texas on the anniversary of Dimebag Darrell's shooting death. Some or all of the members from the three bands came out on stage for a final song and they all covered "Walk". There had to have been 4ish guitarists, two drummers and an unknown number of other musicians. Pretty cool.

Artist: Prince

This was back in 96 or 97. Prince would invite several people at a time to come up on stage to dance. This chick with these thigh high boots and a mini skirt gets up there, tosses a hand full of condoms at Prince's feet then squats down in the middle of the stage....AND TAKES A PISS RIGHT THERE! Security tackled her and had her out of the arena before she could finish.

They were playing at an out door festival. It had rained earlier in the day and everyone in the mosh pit was covered in mud. During their last song the lead singer commented how he was glad no one threw mud at them. Soon after the stage and band were coved in mud. They haven't played at the festival since.

Ani Di Franco - Universal Ampitheatre. On one of her more popular songs (can't recall which) the audience starts singing along, and she stops cold. Band stops playing and everything. Tells everyone to please not sing along cause the song means sooooo much to her, before starting over... WTF?

My Dad went to a Commander Cody Concert at the Freestate when he was in college. Well, it wasn't that long after this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8oT9ag631Q So, we kept yelling at him to do his epic bass toss. He ignored us for awhile, but we finally got him to shake his head at us in a disapproving manner. Love ya Krist.

Early 70's. Band called Muldoon supporting Uriah Heep at Birmingham Town Hall. The singer was absolutely mashed out of his head. They played for 30 seconds before he collapsed into the drum kit, sending drums rolling off in every direction. The rest of the band carried him offstage. Never heard of them again!

We saw Neko Case and the New Pornographers at Old Ironsides back on 03 or 04. Anyhoo they are a totally tame band- people started dancing and the bouncers held up their big Mag-lights shining them at people in threatening manner: No Dancing. The band watched as this happened for a bit, but finally stopped, saying "I feel like we're in 1952" and broke into Footloose. People went nuts.

About half an hour into the show a young man was dancing up and down the isles. The concert promply ended.
