Making the Memory Foam Flower Chair Cushion
Adding a second layer of comfort to my signature flower chair
By Rob Cockerham |
I made a super-soft chair even better.
A few years ago I came across some super soft memory foam at a garage sale, cut it up and stuffed it inside some super soft fabric to make a chair in the shape of a flower. It is super cozy and comfortable, and I couldn't imagine a softer place to sit.
But my friend Summer could. She suggested that I make a second flower cushion and that I drop it in on top of the first one, so the chair is twice as cushioned as before.
"Great idea!" I said. I ordered six yards of yellow "pinkie dot" fabric. This fabric is incredibly soft, marketed for use in baby bedding. It is about $10 a yard if you order it online. The first flower chair layer is orange, so I figured yellow would be a logical choice for the innermost petals of that flower.
I had a second slab of memory foam in the garage. I had even saved the petal template from the previous cushion project, so marking them and cutting them out was very easy. Actually, cutting the foam is pretty tough. I use tin snips and it is something of a chore, like cutting through ice cream.
I cut out two sides of eight petals and a center octagon. I also cut out some diamond-shape pieces to join the petals to one another, like the fabric between the fingers in a glove.
There was a lot of sewing.
Sewing big parts like this is easy sewing, it just takes time. I had to carefully consider how it all went together, and sew it inside-out so that the seams could be hidden inside.
Four petals connected to the center octogon. This is still inside out.
I sewed a velcro closure into one side of a petal, so that I'd have an access to get the foam in and out when I needed to wash this beast. After a few hours of sewing, it was all together and ready for the foam!
I had to squeeze the fat petals of memory foam into their tight shells. It was a real wrestling match, believe it or not.
In the end, I was victorious! The petals were full, and the yellow flower cushion looked and felt amazing!
Confirmed.
The chair is fun and very very soft and warm to sit in.
If you want to read in the flower chair, you can fold one of the petals down to make a little headrest, and you can fold the side petals in to lay across your body if you want a little more warmth. This was a great project and I love the flower chair even more than before!
You can read the story of the original orange chair here. It's from four years ago, and it is almost exactly the same story!
