Menu Switch at TGI Friday's

Accompanying the menu page was a short instruction sheet outlining the page-switching procedure and giving encouragement, such as "don't get caught", and "don't keep the menu and sell it on ebay".

On July 10th, the envelopes were addressed and ready.

TGI Fridays are all over the world, in 49 states and 54 countries, so people from all over could help out.

Taylor in Oregon was the first to reply, just two days later. He switched menu pages at the TGI Fridays in Tigard, OR next to the Washington Square mall.

Read his story here.

On Friday, July 16th, Stacy and I headed to TGI Fridays to try it ourselves. To conceal the phony menu, I tucked it into a copy of the Sacramento News and Review.

Stacy and I have a history of taking sly photos in restaurants. You can check out more in the month of eating out science project.

Friday night was definitely the night to visit Fridays.

We visited the restaurant on Howe Avenue near Hurley Way.  There was a nice crowd inside, not enough to create a super-long wait, but enough to make the restaurant atmosphere slightly chaotic, fun and interesting.

I asked an exiting patron to snap this photo of Stacy and I waiting to be seated. The menu page is poking out of the top of its tabloid camouflage.

As luck would have it, we were seated very close to the kitchen, and a steady stream of servers poured in and out.

We got our menus from the hostess and had just a minute to prepare for the switch.  Our waitress took our drink orders and left us alone for a few minutes.

I took a quick look around and slid the new page into the TGIF menu, on top of the old Atkins page. I snapped a photo, figured out what I wanted to eat, and dropped the closed menu onto the table.
