Oh, Wait, I Meant to ask, When did you get a Big Cash Windfall?

Ah, one more related question, which will probably be a bit less funny but hopefully more informative.

I've won five halloween costume contests and been paid out for two car insurance settlements. Only two of the costume contests actually involved cash, which I blew at Fry's Electronics and on Christmas presents. The first car insurance settlement covered about 70% of a new(er) car, and the cash from a second settlement is probably going to be spent on a minivan.

When did you get a big cash windfall? Have any of these things happened to you?

  • Won the lottery
  • Got a lawsuit settlement check
  • Inherited money
  • Received a performance bonus at work
  • Won a halloween costume contest
  • Obtained an insurance settlement
  • Other Cash Windfall

Comments:

The settlement for my car accident was $18,500. My car wasn't worth very much, but my arm was injured, so I got money for my hospital bill plus pain and suffering.

I inherited $16,000 from my grandmother's estate when I was 16. This was in 1980, so it was a pretty sizable chunk o cash. I got my hands on it when I was 18 and in college. I spent $8000 on recreational drugs and clothes and dinners out in less than 6 months. My mom basically took the rest of it away from me and invested it in real estate deal. That deal went bad, so I lost it.

When I was little and my mum would get those scratchie lottery tickets for her birthday, she'd give them to me and if I won anything I got to keep it. Once I won $50 and put it in a bank account as spending money for a trip to Disneyland, but we never ended up going and my hard-earned money got spent on a new driveway. It was a hell of a driveway, though.

Rather than leave her 26 grandkids $2,000 each when she passes away, my awesome grandmother took us all on a cruise for her 85th birthday. She paid for our entire families. There were 83 of us total. Her 8 kids, 26 grandkids, wives, husbands and great grandkids. It was the best. My grandma has proven it. Leaving money behind is for fools. Instead, she left some awesome memories!

I've had several windfalls. I lucked out and got a valuable domain name. I sold it a year later for $500. My wife has been raking in the dough with unexpected overtime at work. That's kind of a tough trade off, but the extra money is nice. My wife is also... well... a klutz. AFLAC rawks when you're a klutz. $800 for broken arm. $1200 for broken ankle. Even $200 for a cracked finger.

I gave it to my wife's aunt who had some money troubles so my niece could get an iPod for Christmas. Lessons: 1. Share the wealth when you can help out someone else in need 2. Drink Slurpees

I received about $5000 when my grandma died in 2003, and I used it to pay for my tuition when I studied abroad in New Zealand... And I just won a new car on Saturday, so technically, it's not a "cash windfall", but when I have $300 in the bank and new student loans cropping up every year, winning a $25,000 car with taxes paid was pretty damn cool!

During the dotcom years my Silicon Valley roomate's exercised his million dollars worth of stock options. He kept the stock rather than selling, hoping to save a few percent in taxes. The stock declined and he had to sell most everything to pay his tax bill. He wound up with only $11k and a pink slip, and soon went to live with his sister when he was broke.

I was a starving student but I was in the right place at the right time when Skylab crashed to earth - while I took photos of it. I rushed to the local paper and 30 minutes later the photos were being faxed around the world by an AAP guy. I was published in many papers and in Time and Newsweek and they paid me a heap of money - thanks to a nice AAP guy who saw me right.

I inherited over @2,000,000 from my grandfather. I bought a cabin on a lake and put a modest addition on my house. The rest is invested because as a teacher in CT (We don't pay into Social Security) I'll get PENNIES when I retire. The best part about inheriting is that now I CHOOSE to work (same job) as opposed to NEED to. Makes a big diff. when faced with difficult students/parents.

I got a sponsor for my web site (which I had basically just been doing for fun before). They paid me $1200 to put some links to their site up for a year. I'm a sell-out corporate whore, but I'm a sell-out corporate whore with plane tickets to visit my family in America.

Inherited $13000 when my moms boyfriend died, would rather have him than the money. My post card was drawn out of thousands that entered a contest for a free M.A.S.H party after the show ended. Included booze, food, t-shirts, etc. Won, and lost, thousands in slot machines at the Indians' casinos.

I found some "interesting" pictures of my boss and the secretary while going through his desk after work. Now he pays me some $$$ every month not to give the pics to his wife. I'm also sure I'll never get fired!

My parents won the lotto a few years ago (MILLIONS!!). My siblings and I thought our lives would never be the same but my parents are pretty sane. The only thing that changed is now I have a choice to visit my parents when they are at their beach house or the house I grew up in. I haven't seen any money but if I stay on their good side I have a trust...

I'm not a big gambler but my first time in Las Vegas (age 22), I wandered the casino with $2 in nickels. In one hour I cashed in $10 in nickels. Since that time (20 years) I've spent about $20 and haven't won a damn thing.

On my 18th birthday I bought a $1 lotto scratcher and won $100. I also won $100 calling into a radio station. I have absolutely no recollection as to where the money was spent. Any ideas on where to add some zero's to my next windfall?

I sold an empty keg that I stole from a bar one night (and carried ten blocks) for $50 on Craigslist last week. Also, since turning 21 a year ago I have played craps once with a friend in Reno and twice with my father in Vegas. Each time, while rolling, I've netted over $1000 while my friend made about $300 and my father pulled in about $5000. The money is in odds bets.

I won $99 from a $1 scratch off. I took it back in to the store and every so quietly handed it over to the teller. She ran it through and by her loud remarks you would of thought I made off with millions. Normally I wouldn't of minded this except it was in one of those areas of town you do not want to be in. I made a mad dash to the car with some guy trying to bum a few dollars for a 40

When I was about 8, my mom and I went shopping for used skates. The skatemonger threw in a kielbasa, a bag of wild rice and a coffee mug. My mom cooked up the rice and let me have the rest. I remember being quite stoked. I even remember that the mug had a picture of a quail on it, that it was my favourite, and that I drank from it exclusively until it went the way of all mugs - broken.

My 4yo daughter won $25 certificate in the Ft Monroe egg splash. She found the magic numbered plastic eggs from the thousands that they dumped in an indoor pool. You can only use the money for pool expenses. It gave us a $25 discount on the $100 family pool pass.

I teach at a small high school and keep a glass jar with a slit in the lid in my classroom. Any money anyone finds on the floor goes in it by tradition, then we give it away to charity. Last time it totaled $56.23. Found. In six months. On the floor, people.

I got a new job at a company during what turned out to be a banner year for them, and almost everyone got a bonus. I'd never gotten a bonus before, and mine was $1,200. I used half to pay off credit card debt and half to buy a drum set that I could play in my apartment (mesh heads and rubber cymbals, almost noiseless). That was 8 years ago; I still play it almost every day!

I got sent on an expatriate contract to work in the US for 6 months; $100/day per diem, 25% cash bonus on weekly pay, free housing and free car. Pretty sweet deal. Traveling back and forth in business-class between Europe and the US I've made 100+k frequent flier miles that will get me a first class vacation trip to Hawaii

When I was 16 I found $2,000 in a paper bag in the middle of an empty lot. So dodgy. I took it home and bought a better computer. Now I am 26. My fiance and I started a games and hobby store. We started with a $10k investment, put in 5 years work (and took home $60k a year as salary that entire time). We just sold it for $185k, which is AWESOME.

Bought the flat above me to rent out and then the top floor flat 18 months later to rent out also. Spent 6 years completely skint, paying the difference between rent and mortgage, then sold all three in 2007 for £690000 ($1250000) clearing £255000 ($460000) profit after tax. So now have no mortgage, no debt and £65000 ($115000) in the bank.

I inherited $80,000 of Exxon stock when my grandmother died, and I'll probably inherit a lot more when my great aunt dies. That great aunt has also set up a $90,000 dollar trust fund for me. That together will almost be enough to pay for college.
