Where are your Outlets?

Where are your Outlets? No, ah, not your creative outlets, your clothing factory outlets.

We've got two options from Sacramento, and each is situated at the fringe of a metropolis, so far out in the suburbs that it does not threaten the native department stores.

We've got Vacaville outlets to the west, and Folsom outlets to the east.

I noticed a similar setup two years ago near Miami. Florida City, a town 24 miles south, had a cluster of Factory Outlets known as "Prime Outlets". Is there a similar setup where you live?

Where are your factory outlets?

Outlet: San Marcos Prime Outlets    City: Austin

Just like you mention, about 25 miles out of Austin. They've got a GAP outlet, Black and Decker Outlet, Brooks Brothers Outlet, etc.

Outlet: Prime Outlets    City: Jacksonville, FL

There are actually 2, right across I-95 from each other...and I also have a theory of why they area always away from metro areas: 1. Cheap land...which means they can offer cheaper rent to entice people to build there 2. Distance people traveled makes people just WANT to spend money to justify the travel. I mean, you already spent $20 on gas, might as well spend another $20 on pants

Fairly large outlet mall, keeps growing. The mall's been around for ~10 years now. In recent years they've built 2 new regular malls nearby.

Outlet: Gainesville, TX    City: Oklahoma City

There used to be an outlet in Stroud, but it was destroyed in the 1999 F-5 tornado. I think Gainesville is the nearest, 2 hours south.

Outlet: Prime Outlets    City: Indianapolis

About 45 miles from Indy... a second set is further down I65, about 30 miles from this set. A third set used to be north of Indy, also, about 30 miles away, but they closed.

Outlet: Fort Chiswell Outlets    City: Wytheville

Located just outside of the town of Wytheville at the intersection of I-77 and I-81. Built in the late 80's, the outlet never took off due to the location and the layout of the outlet mall, the access road to the mall is not obvious unless you've been there before, I think a lot of people miss the turn and give up looking due to the traffic in the area. (the access road is located near a very busy truck stop) The mall is built on top of a hill, so all you do is walk up and down steps to get to the stores, which combined with the constant wind at the site can make for a very cold shopping experience.

Outlet: Jersey Shore Premium Outlets    City: Jersey Shore

Brand-spankin' new, lots of decent stores. A little bigger and a better layout than the Jackson Premium Outlets, which is near Six Flags Great Adventure. I live pretty much between the two centers, which makes me happy because I do love a great deal! If you build it in Jersey, they will shop.

New Jersey

Outlet: Prime Outlets at Williamsburg and the Williamsburg Outlet Mall    City: Williamsburg

Williamsburg's Prime Outlets is apparently consistently ranked in the top 10 shopping centers in the outlet industry (really? an industry???). With the recent addition of a Sbarro's, you know we've hit the big time. The Williamsburg Outlet Mall, on the other hand, is fairly unexciting and not worth the trip.

Delaware
Thursday 05th of February 2009 11:44 am

Outlet: Shipyard Shops    City: Wilmington

Very small outlet center--there's a Bali/Playtex/Hanes, a Coldwater Creek, and a few other stores. There used to be more (LL Bean, Big Dogs, Claire's) but this outlet center was a flop. The Shipyard Shops are located on the Wilmington Riverfront. Take the exit for MLK Boulevard off of I-95 to get there.

Outlet: Cape Cod Factory Outlet    City: Hyannis

15 miles outside Hyannis, which has a mall finally worth mentioning. The big draws here are 9 West, Carter's, and Corning. In short, not so much... Hey- it's Cape Cod. We're expecting tourists to show up and leave their wallets behind, so who really wants to offer up a bargain?

Outlet: Kittery Outlets    City: Kittery, ME

The Kittery outlets are a couple of hours south of where I live in Central Maine. But we have Marden's up here, where you can get stuff real cheap, from clothes to furniture to food. I should have bought it when I saw it at Marden's!

Outlet: Allen Premium Outlets    City: Dallas

27.28 miles from downtown Dallas. Decent Banana Republic, Gap and J.Crew shops, Neiman Marcus Last Call, and a bunch of other random crap that just serves to make me walk farther. The excellent Crate&Barrel outlet went under a while back. The drive is up 75, which is a beating. Sad.

Maryland
Monday 09th of February 2009 2:02 pm

Outlet: Downtown Freeport    City: Freeport, Maine / Portland, Maine

The entire downtown area of Freeport, Maine is essentially an outdoor mall made up of outlets. Kittery is the other (previously mentioned), and about an hour away. I live a mile from LL Bean (the cornerstone of the town) and, along with most residents, avoid downtown at all costs during the summer months. I avoid it in general, actually.

Outlet: Folsom    City: Sacramento

Interesting fact: Outlet stores must be positioned as not to compete with retail organizations. For instance Macy's sells a brand of clothing which is also available at an outlet store for much less. Same clothes (not imperfects as is the impression). Macy's requires a "non-compete" radius of approx 20 miles to the nearest "outlet" clothing store. SHOP OUTLETS!!
