In 'n Out Burger Drive Thru Menu Prices, 2001 vs. 2020

Comparing the Menu and Prices to Twenty years ago

By Rob Cockerham |

2001 Menu

This is going to be easy. In 'n Out has a super sparse menu. Four food items and a dozen things to drink. Much like a classy restaurant, they didn't have dollar signs on the menu. If you hate ordering food in a drive thru because there are too many messy questions about your order, In 'n Out is the place for you. This photo was taken in July 2001.

2020 Menu

The Menu in 2020 is almost exactly the same as it was 20 years ago. No chicken, no breakfast, no value menu. The prices have gone up very uniformly, about 80% across the board.

2001 Burgers

Look at all of these burger options.

2001 Burger Prices

  1. Double Double: $2.50
  2. Cheeseburger: $1.65
  3. Hamburger: $1.65

2020 Burgers

The 2020 menu still has giant legible lettering. I was going to say that the menu doesn't have photos of the food like most 2020 drive thrus, but it actually has a photo of every single menu item on that upper menu panel.

2020 Burger Prices

  1. Double-Double: $4.25 +$1.75 (+70%)
  2. Cheeseburger: $2.95 +$1.30 (+79%)
  3. Hamburger: $2.65 +1.20 (+83%)

2001 Combos

The combos in 2001. Because they've only got three burgers, they've only got three combo meals. I believe In 'n Out is an excellent value for their food, but these meal combos didn't offer a single cent of savings over buying the items seperately.

2001 Combo Prices

  1. Double Double Combo: $4.49
  2. Cheeseburger Combo: $3.64
  3. Hamburger Combo: $3.44

2020 Combos

Three meal combo numbers. Crazy. The most expensive combo at In 'n Out Burger 2020 is $7.95. Compare this to $11.69 for expensive combos at Carl's Jr. Ordering the combos at In 'n Out will save you 4 cents over buying the burger, fries and drink seperately.

2020 Combo Prices

  1. Double Double Combo: $7.95 +$3.46 (+77%)
  2. Cheeseburger Combo: $6.65 +$3.01 (+82%)
  3. Hamburger Combo: $6.35 +$2.91 (+84%)

2001 Drinks

You might associate In 'n Out with having two drinks, shakes and Cokes, but they actually offer a dozen different drink options, including pink lemonade and hot chocolate. Can you imagine getting a shake for $1.39?

2001 Drink Prices

  1. Shakes $1.39
  2. small drink: $0.89
  3. medium drink: $1.00
  4. large drink: $1.15
  5. extra large drink: $1.35
  6. milk .55

2020 Drinks

The drinks at In 'n Out Burger have not quite doubled in price. It is almost as if all the prices were carefully raised by 82% since 2001.

That shake is still a great deal.

2020 Drink Prices

  1. Shake $2.55 +$1.16 (+83%)
  2. small drink: $1.65 +$0.76 (+85%)
  3. medium drink: 1.75 +$0.75 (+75%)
  4. large drink: $1.95 +$0.80 (+69%)
  5. extra large drink: $2.15 +$0.80 (+59%)
  6. milk: $0.99 +$0.44 (+80%)

2001 Fries

French Fries are the only side dish available at In 'n Out Burger. If you are inside the restaurant, you can watch the workers crush fresh potatoes through a wall-mounted cutter.

2001 Fries and Sides Prices

  1. Fries $.99

2020 Fries

In 'n Out Burger fries are twice as much as they were in 2001. They do not offer curly fries, crosscut fries, chili cheese fries, cheese sticks, fried zucchini, egg rolls, stuffed jalapenos, bacon cheddar potato wedges, mini tacos, tater tots or onion rings.

2020 Fries and Sides Prices.

  1. Fries $1.99 +$1.00 (+101%)
