Stars only go on talk shows when they have something to promote.

It was obvious to  me, for a long time, that the people on talk shows tend to have a new book or show, but it was a few years later that I realized that shows absolutely don't invite Ethan Hawke to the show for the hell of it when he doesn't have any new movie or project.

It is better for the star, and better for the talk show if he has something new to announce. The big picture is that celebrities move in and out of public focus. It is easy to keep track of who is on the rise, but not that easy to keep track of who is fading out.
