Yellowman Wow. I guess certain authors never leave their niche market, do they? |
Jonathan That ended up being surprisingly easy. |
Kristin Arkansas is not as stupid as it looks! |
|
Ryan I\'d never read anything from Crichton or tan, and luckily Palahniuk\'s book was Fight Club |
Leon What a cool idea for a quiz. I hadn\'t read a couple of the authors, but I know their niche and it wasn\'t hard to
figure out which style matched which author.
Interesting how much metadata a single page of text reveals...
Leon

PS. Where\'s the \'state\' picture for New Zealand? Hawaii was as close as I could get to my Pacific home... :-P |
Leon PPS. I\'m sorry but I can\'t help leaving an annoying programmer comment (I am, after all, an annoying programmer...) I
think you could improve your script:
http://php.net/nl2br
http://php.net/set-magic-quotes-runtime (or http://php.net/stripslashes) |
Eli Hooray for Google Book search. Not that the last one needed any searching... |
Feck Here in Florida, we are too busy dumping out McMansions to read
|
Katie Whoot! We still read in Arizona, even if we do have a lousy state education system... |
Chris You made me work for advertising. |
Doug That was fun! I got as many hints from style (lots of dialogue in the Dan Brown; a serious tone to the Amy Tan) as I
did from content (\"Marla and \"Tyler\" from Fight Club; Just the first line of the Tolkien). |
j.m. 7/7: I guess I read to much trash. |
Justin 7 out of 7 - who is this impossible for - people who don\'t read? |
Stephen V I enjoyed that - it was an interesting challenge. Pity the drop down list does not allow me to choose non-US locations
such as England! |
Jon Wow, I really hate Dan Brown. I was able to guess which book was his by selecting the writing style I disliked the most. |
AidelMaidel This former Wyoming-ite only mixed up Pahalunik (whatever his name is) with Dan Brown. Not bad. |
frank damn you Grisham! damn you Tan! |
chitowneben hurray for your quiz, rob! a cool idea, even if i only did get 5/7. |
Toneman Excellent quiz. Making it multiple choice simplified things considerably. |
Meli Ha! That went surprisingly well. |
Matt Thanks for the self-esteem boost! I think I only read two of them, but gut instinct and process of elimination worked
well. |
JSug 5/7. Not bad. I swapped two authors I\'m not familiar with. |
Sorcy I got 7/7, but I think that was partially luck --Velociraptors, Marla and Tyler, and Aragorn were all giveaways. The Amy
Tan one sounded feminine. Dan Brown swears a lot. I just guessed for the other two, though I thought Grisham was
grittier. |
Jeff I got \'em all . . . . but some were too easy. The Grisham one was very well picked, gives you his writing style
without obviously being about lawyers. Same with Crichton, obviously him immediately. Not as good a job with Palahniuk
(whose writing I would recognize if it weren\'t Fight Club) and Tolkien (c\'mon, Aragorn? giveaway).
Still a fun excercise |
Michelle As promised, this really was fun. :) |
Nick Now you need to make a test for psychologists to diagnose the authors based on their writing. |
Rob Cockerham Thanks, everyone.
People are much more likely to leave a comment if they achieve a perfect 7/7 score. Anyone else find it incredible that
these particular pages were picked at random? |
Irv Easier than I expected.
I\'d welcome this as a regular event on Cockeyed.com! |
Matt Random? Really? I refuse to believe that! |
AJ Fun stuff. |
Drew I am teh hawt! |
Geoff I scored 7/7, and felt strongly that Texas needed to be represented.
I believe a collection of 300 random pages from all of these authors would make the world\'s most perfect book to read
on an airplane. |
Junior I got 4/7, and I\'ve never read any of these authors/works.
C\'mon, who else writes about dinos or dwarves, those two were gimmes. |
Arnold I\'ve never been able to read any of these books. I guess it\'s my German accent. |
Dan 7/7 Go me!
That was fun, Rob |
john 5/7, switched tan and gregory around. |
Adam For someone who doesn\'t read books... I dunno. Tan was easy. If anyone out there missed Tolkien, they should be slapped
upside the head. I wouldn\'t have gotten Palahnuik if it hadn\'t been Fight Club. Velociraptors were a giveaway.
Phillipa Gregory gave me the most trouble, as I\'ve never heard of her before. So the last 3 were kind of deductive
reasoning. |
Phibbsy Most of those books were actually enjoyable, hence memorable. |
Whiz Kid I figured \'em all out, and I\'m not even a state. |
ds I knew two for sure, Guessed two right and got four wrong |
joe hooray for deduction |
Finn Oregon, smart. Yay! |
Gaper Maker I had sex with your mom. |
Alex C Once I saw that it was multiple choice, it was much easier.
|
Ph.D. Student For our qualifying exams, we had to do something much harder - only a paragraph, picked at random, with all the
character names removed. And you have to supply the title and author and where in the book that it came from. And you
don\'t get a handy drop-down list. :-) |
Runaway DaVinci I exchanged Dan Brown with John Grisham. Funny how you never see the two of them together at the same time... |
Nora 7 out of 7 and I\'ve only read three of these authors--and only two of these books. Hmm. |
John I swapped Dan Brown and Philippa Gregory. |
Josh I\'ve read all but two of those books but I still got them all correct. |
Malfa 5/7 ain\'t bad for someone who\'s only seen the movies! |
Vijay I\'d read all but the Gregory and the Grisham, and didn\'t particularly like the Brown, but they were all pretty easy.
Next time, throw some really off the wall authors in there, like Craig Clevenger or Max Brooks. Then we\'ll have a real
challenge. Or maybe an author who\'s known for having used several different writing styles, like Elmore Leonard. |
Mark That was pretty easy, I guess I\'m not as illiterate as I thought |
When I saw the word dildo I was pretty skeptical they were random pages. But also I missed the author of that one, so I
don\'t trust my own gut instinct too much. Fun little quiz. |
Frank Whoo hoo! 7 of 7! Dan brown writes like a tard! |
Chet Where them pictures be? |
scott I hate to read, and thus reflects my score :( |
Aaron I don\'t read and I got all but two - Palahniuk and Brown. I got Amy Tan because I knew it had something to do with
asians... is that wrong of me? |
Roger I guess I read a bit, I have read four of the books, and the rest was process of elimination. |
Peter Having never read anything by any of these but Tolkein (and even then, only in my youth) I managed to pull off this
score.
Probably because I expected Grisham to be gritty crime fiction, and Crichton to have long scientific exposition, and -
well, you know.
Dan Brown was the funniest - I picked him up because the previous chapter obviously ended on a sharp cliffhanger! |
rose Fun! Got em all although I\'ve never read any Brown or Gregory. Good selection of authors to try this with. Wouldn\'t
have gotten too far if I had to do it without the drop down list to select from. |
Yr Mama Well I knew the fight club novel right away, as well as the JRR Tolkien. Some authors are pretty easy. Everything else I
was confused on lol. |
D\'Artagnan A couple were easy, some a bit tougher. I admit a couple were lucky guesses! |
Chicago Is it bad that I could identify a piece of Dan Brown schlock based solely on the way the paragraphs looked? You don\'t
even have to read it (and thank god, because who would want to). Authors I\'ve never read anything by: Tan, Grisham,
Gregory, Palahniuk, Tolkien, and all but the first 5 pages of the Da Vinci Code. |
Jason Only read one of the books (and regretted it since it was awful) and seen two as movies - but they were all pretty easy
to figure out. |
the great As a self-declared \'non-reader,\' I must say I did pretty well. I know the gist of what most of the authors write about
and used that. 5/7, not bad. |
Davey Hey, not from ND but MB. Why do you hate Canada so much, Rob?
Should be studying for my PhD English comp but this successfully wasted 15 minutes of my evening...
Also, Dan Brown is terrible. Whether or not you buy that assertion (you shameless, Da Vinci Code reading sheep),
Digital Fortress is probably Brown\'s worst, and remains objectively a dumb book. |
Two-Tone That was weirdly easy, even not having read most of the books. |
eri I thought that this was going to be a lot harder than it was. Especially since I don\'t read most of these authors. |
Ellison Dude, most of that isn\'t even real literature. |
BluePinto I thought I was well-read. |
Ian I\'d read 4 of those authors/books, making it a lot easier. |
craig Tanis i don\'t know if that was luck or I\'m just some subconscious literary genius! |
Dan 6/7
I had no idea Dan Brown was such a potty mouth. |
Michelle wow I did way better on page 1 than I did on page 2. |
David I did better on the second one. I thought I was a reader, but now I know my life is a sham. |
Brooke Hey Rob, this is fun! I got them all. I only had to read 3 words of the Tolkein to get that answer, haha. |
donnyspi HoLLa! |
Timbo Glee! |
Susan Ha! Nailed it! I was glad the screenplay for Fight Club is amazingly close to the novel. Dan Brown sucks. |
Stu Good guess on Gregory & Grisham. |
Ari Should have used something from the Smith of Wooten Major to throw people off the Tolkien track! |
orangesrhyme Aced it- first try. YEAH!
|
Jason I haven\'t read a single one of those books |
OKP This was pretty easy...I\'ll have another! |
CEC That was very easy. Bring it on! |
Sl8ofhand (John) 14 for 14...How about some real authors...:-)>>>> |
|
Juany Wow...I must not read enough now. |
Grace Wow, now I don\'t have to read any of those books. |
|
Aoede Deduction ftw. |
Jimbo I did the second test first and got 7/7 so I was intrigued about the first one. Got a 7/7 on this one too. You\'ve
made me feel smart for a day! |
Joanne Not to bad. Think it is a good idea. |
Tracey It was easier than I thought it would be. The only two I had to guess were Amy Tan and Philippa Gregory. The others
were quite obvious. BTW, I don\'t live in ND any more, but in England. Why don\'t you have options outside of the US? |
Julie Easy, but I\'m a librarian. |
|
hutchiee 4/7 is a C+ right? The 3 authors here I\'ve read I could identify easily, the fourth I got correct was dumb luck. |
|
Samantha Well, I\'m satisfied with my score. That was an interesting quiz! |
|
dave I don\'t know who this Dan Brown guy is, but I\'d like to introduce him to a sharp stick. |
Melville One page of Grisham is one too many... |
|
YayMe! 7/7 and no cheatin\'! |
|
April Poo. This one was harder for me. |
|
|
P That was pretty fun. Pick out the ones you know (I read Digital Fortress over 10 years ago but the scene stood out) and
guess wildly with what little information you have. Wouldn\'t have made it if they weren\'t all different authors,
though. |
Max Yes! The only ones I wasn\'t sure about were the Grisham and the Gregory. Similar enough to be confused with each other,
dissimilar enough to make a difference. |
|
Tom Morrisey I\'m not as bad at that quiz as our state legislature is at getting its butt into the chamber. |
Natalie Wow - I hadn\'t even read half of these books, but I\'d read other stuff from the same authors. Good thing these authors
were so different from each other, style-wise! |
