I got \'em all . . . . but some were too easy. The Grisham one was very well picked, gives you his writing style without obviously being about lawyers. Same with Crichton, obviously him immediately. Not as good a job with Palahniuk (whose writing I would recognize if it weren\'t Fight Club) and Tolkien (c\'mon, Aragorn? giveaway). Still a fun excercise

For someone who doesn\'t read books... I dunno. Tan was easy. If anyone out there missed Tolkien, they should be slapped upside the head. I wouldn\'t have gotten Palahnuik if it hadn\'t been Fight Club. Velociraptors were a giveaway. Phillipa Gregory gave me the most trouble, as I\'ve never heard of her before. So the last 3 were kind of deductive reasoning.

For our qualifying exams, we had to do something much harder - only a paragraph, picked at random, with all the character names removed. And you have to supply the title and author and where in the book that it came from. And you don\'t get a handy drop-down list. :-)

I\'d read all but the Gregory and the Grisham, and didn\'t particularly like the Brown, but they were all pretty easy. Next time, throw some really off the wall authors in there, like Craig Clevenger or Max Brooks. Then we\'ll have a real challenge. Or maybe an author who\'s known for having used several different writing styles, like Elmore Leonard.

Having never read anything by any of these but Tolkein (and even then, only in my youth) I managed to pull off this score. Probably because I expected Grisham to be gritty crime fiction, and Crichton to have long scientific exposition, and - well, you know. Dan Brown was the funniest - I picked him up because the previous chapter obviously ended on a sharp cliffhanger!

Is it bad that I could identify a piece of Dan Brown schlock based solely on the way the paragraphs looked? You don\'t even have to read it (and thank god, because who would want to). Authors I\'ve never read anything by: Tan, Grisham, Gregory, Palahniuk, Tolkien, and all but the first 5 pages of the Da Vinci Code.

Hey, not from ND but MB. Why do you hate Canada so much, Rob? Should be studying for my PhD English comp but this successfully wasted 15 minutes of my evening... Also, Dan Brown is terrible. Whether or not you buy that assertion (you shameless, Da Vinci Code reading sheep), Digital Fortress is probably Brown\'s worst, and remains objectively a dumb book.
